Delano South Beach

(Attention: The Delano Hotel, the one-time nexus of the hip, has been shuttered since March amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it has a new owner and is in renovation). Delano South Beach is perhaps the trendiest of South Beach Hotels. Every room and space in the Delano is a design masterpiece. Dominated by white and marble, in a sought-after minimal style. There is a pool

The iconic Delano pool
The iconic Delano Pool and its unique atmosphere!

where you can spend your day swimming or strolling around against the backdrop of music, parties, and throngs of people. Celebrities in the pool.

You never have to leave. At the Delano Miami, you can go to the movies, play volleyball, swim, sleep, have treatments at the Agua spa, and eat everything from sushi to lobster ravioli. And every space within the hotel is its sphere. The Blue Door restaurant, which Madonna co-owns, is a hotspot, packed with hotel guests, stars, models, and locals. What we suggest: Don’t even think about eating before eight o’clock. The pool table is always draped with hot young things, the bar is small, dark, and sophisticated, and the lobby is sexy with its towering columns, oversized mirrors, and billowing curtains (despite the sunburned tourists who stroll through around 7 pm before heading off to Joe’s Stone Crab).

The private beach has peach and white tents stocked with beach balls and fruit. But the pièce de résistance is the pool. You can spend an entire day underwater—there’s music (yes, underwater music), and separate spots for playing, floating around, and even snacking.

Delano is situated directly on the beach. Guests enjoy complimentary oversize beach chairs and umbrellas and water sports are available at a fee. The beach also includes a tented children’s play area stocked with toys.

Steps from the ocean, dining by the pool is the perfect spot for a quick bite or refreshing drink from sunrise to sunset. The casual but stylish poolside bistro serves an imaginative menu of Mediterranean-style appetizers and tapas, grilled fresh seafood, and meats. No reservations are required.

Reviews

Delano South Beach offers world-class standards–from chic decor to attentive staffing. And the food offerings are ALL tasty. Highly recommend staying here when in Miami!”

Great hotel for architecture lovers! Art deco outside, Philip Stark’s inside, and great pool, great food, great concierge. The children were really welcome.”

“I am from Sweden and I can really recommend this hotel. It has everything you need, pool, private beach, excellent dining, and Tuesday nights at Florida room fulfill your stay.”

Good location, stylish with some plush features. Nice breakfast area overlooking the pool. Valet parking staff is very good. Easy access to the beach”

Staff a bit hit and miss, we didn’t get the room we reserved until we complained (in fairness after a couple of hiccups they did resolve this). The pool area and bar could do with a bit of TLC.”

Beautiful pool and grounds. Room was outdated, tiny bathrooms smelled like mold, AC didn’t work, refrigerator didn’t work”

Swimming pool and bedroom are ok but the time of the check-in – 4 pm was too late for people who arrive in the city early in the morning. I’ve never seen it before.”

The Scene

• Delano South Beach offers various dining choices to suit any mood. The Blue Door restaurant inside the Hotel, under the direction of restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow and renowned chef Claude Troisgros, provides refined modern French cuisine with Brazilian and global influences.

• What we love
It’s right on the ocean and steps from South Beach’s hottest nightclubs. The brunch at the on-site restaurant Blue Door Fish. Uber-modern Philippe Starck design. After-dark fun at The Florida Room, the on-site lounge designed by Kravitz Designs. The chic, small rooftop Agua spa, offers 360-degree views of South Beach, as well as its famous Milk and Honey Massage. Private, whimsical, luxurious bungalow-style rooms by the pool.

• What to know
The hotel is ground zero when it comes to bustling South Beach action, which often lasts until the wee hours of the morning. During your stay, you’ll likely encounter a velvet rope or two. It can take some time (up to 30 minutes) to get your car from the valet, so call far enough in advance. The on-site restaurants are some of the best in SoBe, and therefore a bit pricey. Standard rooms are a bit smaller than at most luxury hotels.

• The Spa
Located on the hotel’s roof, the renowned Agua Spa in Miami is a serenely beautiful and peaceful space offering state-of-the-art spa treatments to rejuvenate the body, mind, and spirit. Housed in a pristine white setting with an enormous private terrace and 360-degree views, agua is the ultimate sanctuary. Agua at Delano South Beach along with Agua at Mondrian in South Beach is the only two spas in the United States to carry products by SJAL.
