Little Havana, an area west of Brickell Avenue with Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street behind the area of Miami Downtown) as its thoroughfare, offers visitors more than a taste of the Isle of Cuba.
With nearly as many Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Guatemalans and Puerto Ricans as Cubans, Little Havana is a familiar melting place for many Hispanics.
Every March, the most important party is Sunday March 15th and is one of Miami’s events we strong suggest, there is the famous “Calle Ocho” a typical Little Hawana Festival, where up to one million people converge on the streets for what’s billed as the biggest block party in the world!
If you’ve never been to El Festival de la Ocho, you owe it to yourself to attend!
Walk along Calle Ocho, the festival closes off 24 blocks of SW 8th, street and savor its sights, sounds and smells: tobacco stores with hand-rolled cigars, botánicas, offering herbal cures and potions.
Men wearing cotton guayabera shirts playing dominos; toetapping salsa and merengue music; and the irresistible fragrance of latin cuisine from restaurants and cafes.
Don’t forget to try also the Cuban cafe!
So you can walk, do shopping, dance and have fun. Strongly reccomended.
We don’t suggest, after evening, to visit Little Hawana in other dates.
Better to use a cab or have a GPS on board.
It’s a safe place during the day and it’s preferible to walk just in Calle Ocho.
