We thought you might like a little additional information on the typical costs associated with charters on these large yachts.
The charter fee generally covers only the hire of the yacht and crew, all other expenses are in addition to the charter fee. These additional expenses are covered by the Advance Provisioning Allowance or APA.
The APA for sailing yachts is usually 15 – 25% of the charter fee.
The APA covers the cost of fuel, food, wines and liquors, dockage, communications, etc. Any APA not used will be returned to you at the end of the charter as you leave. On the other hand, if expenses exceed the APA (maybe excessive cruising so high fuel costs, requests of rare liquors, etc.) you will be expected to reimburse the yacht as you leave the charter. This is rare but you need to be aware of this possible expense.
Any taxes would also be additional. For example, charters in Greece are taxed at 4.5% of the charter fee, Florida 6.5-7.5% depending on where you pick up, the Bahamas would be 4%. Most of the yachts in the West Mediterranean are tax exempt so there will usually be no tax due on those charters.
The Caribbean generally has no tax on the charter fees.
It is also customary to tip the crew 10-15% of the charter fee for a job well done.
In Europe tipping is not as common so maybe 5-10% of the charter fee. However the amount is always at your discretion and the crews do work hard for you and definitely appreciate these gratuities!
