The Betsy Miami Beach

the betsy hotel in south beach miami

You can immediately tell the Betsy Hotel Miami Beach is different: She looks like a demure Southern Belle set in a sea of flamboyant Art Deco divas. Situated at the quieter end of Ocean Drive in South Beach, the white building has a Georgian facade and a sweeping front porch that looks like something you’d find in the oak-shrouded Deep South rather than in sexed-up South Beach. Just off the lobby, Chef Tourondel oversees the celebrated Miami hotspot, BLT Steak. Formerly the Betsy Ross, the property dates back to 1942. When it reopened as the Betsy in 2009, the new decor was strikingly different.

The colonial-style fans hanging from the lobby’s coffered ceilings pay homage to tradition, while safari-inspired touches (wooden carvings from Africa, mirrors fringed in zebra prints) pair with natural fiber area rugs to add some whimsy to the equation.
The hotel’s 61 rooms are not overly spacious, but they’re full of style and comfort. The contrast of dark hardwood floors and white lacquered furnishings creates a clean, calming vibe, while raffia-covered ceilings and four-poster beds decked with plush Frette linens add some romance to the picture. Plasma TVs, iPod docking stations, and a tricked-out entertainment system with movies and music on demand head the list of standard techno touches.

REVIEWS

Breakfast was very good and good value. The staff was fantastic. I loved getting a newspaper. I loved music at night. Good restaurant in the hotel. Loved the access to good books.

The location and overall feel of the property are awesome. Classy but hip. No extra frills but has everything you need. Steps from the beach and everything you want in SOBE. I love this hotel and have stayed here a few times now… but it’s starting to feel a little rundown. The room/bathroom was fairly clean, but both felt worn and tired. The drain in the shower wasn’t working properly and water just poured onto the bathroom floor. Bad showering is a bit of a pain.

Almost every moment was well thought through and beautiful. From evening Jazz, an impressive breakfast menu, rooftop yoga… all right at Miami Beach. I can’t think of anything, except perhaps trying to avoid the fire alarm going off in the middle of the night. Random problems are hard to control.

Samantha, Los Angeles

The room is small but nicely laid out, with good products and materials, the location is great, across the street from the beach and close to many restaurants and bars. The gym and pool(s) are also nice and there are dining and drinking options on site. I think Betsy is a good option depending on the price difference between some of the nicer competitors. For example, during my stay, I could have opted for some other options that I know are much nicer for minimally more per night.

The atmosphere and friendly staff. The king suite was beautifully decorated and spacious. Bed a bit soft but comfortable and with nice clean sheets. The humidity in the building and there should be more focus on cleaning because I still sawdust and the floor was not completely clean. I think there could be more eye for detail.

Guests looking for delicious dining options near The Betsy won’t be disappointed. The hotel’s in-house restaurant, LT Steak & Seafood, offers a modern take on classic American cuisine, while local favorites such as Havana 1957 and Puerto Sagua serve up authentic Cuban and seafood dishes, respectively. The Betsy Hotel Miami Beach has a Gym and a small courtyard pool fringed by tropical foliage. If swimming’s not on your agenda but you still want to lounge in the sun, Betsy’s rooftop lounge area, the Deck, is a great place to kick back. It’s kitted out with plush chaise longues and nooks for curling up with a cocktail or a book. Retractable sails add a somewhat clubby vibe at night, making it a good place for a pre-dinner cocktail.

For a meal to remember, BLT Steak, the steakhouse bistro of New York City fame, is just off the hotel’s lobby. South Beach’s never-say-die club scene is easily accessible on foot or by cab from the hotel, but one of Miami’s hippest hangouts happens to be in Betsy’s basement. The entrance is sort of hidden, but once you find B-Bar, with its reflective ceilings and world-class DJs commanding the turntables, you just might settle in for the night.
