Marcel teamed with the Mondrian Miami brand for this offbeat – and off-beach location (don’t worry, it’s just a five-minute taxi ride)! He has created a classic boutique hotel – its bright and gleaming modern-baroque ambiance underscores this masterpiece of gorgeous extravagance.
Mondrian South Beach has a stunning pool landscape, with a party pool deck right on the Bay, luxury cabanas, and low white loungers craftily concealed in secret pathways. There’s a sixteen-story waterfall edifice that leads to the white-on-white lobby punched with hits of black in the floating staircase and wait till you see the art–wall installations rotate digital images on huge flat-screen monitors. And a dining room to die for – Asia de Cuba of course! Two stunning swimming pools; one an infinity and outdoor living rooms for total relaxation. And there’s an exclusive Aqua day spa and fitness center!
Each enormous guest room has everything you could want – and more! Unusual for South Beach, there are kitchenettes in the studios and the sumptuous suites while the spacious minimalist bathrooms are stocked with those gorgeous Agua toiletries. One entire wall is a floor-to-ceiling mirror and the rainfall shower is slyly tucked into a chandelier fixture, right in the center of the ceiling!
Nestled slightly away, from the pulsating heart of the South Beach party hub this chic spot offers an allure all its own. While venturing out might require a set of wheels, no car? No problem! Ocean Drive, with its sun-kissed sands, is just a laid-back stroll away – think less than half an hour. And while this slice of Miami Beach might lack direct beachfront access, the Mondrian dazzles, boasting a seaside pool that’s perpetually bathed in rhythm and revelry.

What we love
The Mondrian is the only hotel on South Beach facing west, with excellent views at sunset. The automated gift shop, Semi-Automatic, could be from The Jetsons, with gifts up to $5,000 at the touch of a button. The adjustable colors and levels of lighting in the guestrooms. Agua Spa, also designed by Marcel Wanders, exclusively carries products from SJAL. The fitness room has great views of the bay and downtown.
What to know
The (hot) young Euro scene overtakes the pool, so the elderly and body-conscious should beware! On weekends, entry to the hotel’s bar can be rather selective. Though on the water, the hotel does not have direct beach access. The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Ocean Drive and SoBe’s most popular beaches. Internet and valet parking are pricey ($15 and $37 a day, respectively).
THE SPA
The latest Agua Spa in the Mondrian South Beach features 4,000 square feet of Marcel Wanders-designed interiors with six treatment rooms equipped to offer an extensive variety of services. Along with its signature Milk and Honey treatments and private garden-view terrace, Agua at Mondrian is one of the only two spas in the United States to carry products by SJAL.
Blue Kashmir – Saphir Facial
An exclusive to agua facial; a perfectly balanced facial designed to restore fatigue and exhausted skin. Pearl enzymatic mask for polishing and brightening followed by Kashmir regeneration mask for restoration. Includes decollete massage using precious oil infused with blue Kashmir sapphires.
